July NorthBayNews

Dear North Bay Burners,

I had a lot of fun at the Multi-Regional Summit hanging out with the Regional Contacts and community organizers from Reno, Tahoe, Sacramento and the East Bay. I was not the only one there repping North Bay, Manky from Playaterps was also there to give a presentation. It was great to see everybody, I wasn’t able to attend last year, so I’m glad I made the trek. We also had Steven Ra$pa, Dusty and Danger Ranger, Bravo from Placement, Maria from the ARTery, and a whole range of other folks there to present on various topics of interest. I learned some important things, met some new people, and generally enjoyed being up there in the mountains at the Cisco Grove Campground.

One of the fun things I got to participate in was helping to select the projects funded by the BWB Ignition Grant offered to our group. I really enjoyed hearing about all of the great things people sent in, each application had merit. After much deliberation two projects were selected to receive funding. The community garden project at the Morris Burner Hotel in Reno was granted $500 and the art walk at a park in Elk Grove project organized by the folks from the Pagan Bunny Burn got the remaining $1000 grant. Congratulations to both, I am excited to see how the projects turn out.

We also heard more about the Great Train Wreck, a collaboration between the Reno and Sacramento Burners headed up to the playa this year. North Bay is invited to help build a part of it if we want – what shall we make? A smoke stack? I think another region is already making the train station, or a platform of some kind. Basically this project consists of two trains, one build in Sac, one in Reno, which will race towards each other on a track on Friday night. After they collide they will be set on fire, so your basic crash and burn. The entire project, including the track, is to be built out of wood. These are going to be wooden trains. They are not sure how they will be driven yet, but we may also get a chance to help propel them down the tracks if it ends up being people powered. I know for a fact we are invited to help staff the docents who will be there to tell people about the project during the week. That’s a four hour shift for anyone interested in dressing up and acting out. More on that as it develops! If you’re excited to head up a local crew to build something for this let me know and I’ll connect you with the project leads.

Things I learned, in a nutshell. 1) If you aren’t planning to burn your art, and want to be considered for civic placement post-event, make sure you get structural engineering done (architectural drawings with a wet stamp) before you build. 2) Playaterps has volunteers who may be able to come to your training or event and provide sign language services for the deaf community. 3) Adopt-a-Highway is a great way to give back to your community and get some name recognition so later when you want to pull permits for an event you are known as a group that does good things.

There was a lot more stuff we discussed, and I’m happy to share what I learned with anyone who’s interested. Meanwhile please read on for much information, events and more.

xoxo RLL

Tickets, Tickets, Tickets

Make sure you go into your Ticketfly account and change your password after the recent data breach. Your Burner Profile email and your Ticketfly email need to be the same. Capiche?

OMG Ticket Sales Registration is open from July 25-27, 2018, more information on that and STEP here.

Want to make sure the aftermarket ticket you’re buying is legit? Go here to find out how. And never pay more than face value! Selling a ticket? That goes double for you. Ok that sounds wrong. But you get what I mean. Sell ’em for face value, it’s the way we do.

Call for Speakers: Speaker Series in Center Camp Cafe

Every year the Speaker Series has a sub-theme. We ask you to consider how your talk might fit into it. Our sub theme for 2018 is:

**Em(Body)ment- How every body (whether mechanical or flesh) effects the way we perceive and act**

From Wikipedia: Embodied cognition is the theory that many features of cognition, whether human or otherwise, are shaped by aspects of the entire body of the organism. The features of cognition include high level mental constructs (such as concepts and categories) and performance on various cognitive tasks (such as reasoning or judgment). The aspects of the body include the motor system, the perceptual system, bodily interactions with the environment (situatedness) and the assumptions about the world that are built into the structure of the organism.

Crudely: If you have hands, knobs are tools. If you do not, they may be impediments. We want to ask you to explore a way in which you, human, robot, or other, enter the world, specifically through physical embodiment and how that influences the way we perceive ourselves, each other, and interact with the world.

Some things to consider when submitting your topic may include:

— How you reason and what you study based on your embodiment
— How decisions are made based on embodiment
— The way you speak/the language you use

Of course, we accept talks that are not specific to our theme, however talks that incorporate this year’s event theme —I, Robot or Em(Body)ment—will be given scheduling priority.

Structure of Our Talks:

  • Talks generally range in length from 10-30 minutes.
  • There is a moderated Q&A that follows every talk ranging in time from 5-25 minutes depending on the submission, the time slot, and the audience engagement level. This is where the moderator and the audience can question and engage with the presenter on their assumptions and thesis.
  • All submissions and topics are welcome, as long as general Burning Man ethos and values are upheld i.e. no promotions of products, corporations, political candidates, or rigid partisanship.
  • We are looking for speakers and talks, not workshops.
  • We are looking for fully structured talks that reveal and explore the nature of the topic submitted. Research, whether academic or experiential is welcomed and appreciated.
  • We are a family friendly venue until dark, and we have no speaker slots after dark this year, though that doesn’t mean that we will not accept talks on ‘racy’ or more ‘adult’ subjects… it’s just something to consider in the framing of your submission and talk.

The submission form is HERE

Fill out the submission form and then email speakerseries@burningman.org with questions, comments, or ideas!

Call for Participation in the 2018 Everywhere/ARTery Pavilion

Greetings Burners around the World! We’re calling on you to help artfully activate the Everywhere/ARTery Pavilion with performance, art, and interactive experiences.

What is the Everywhere/ARTery Pavilion?

Operated by Burning Man Project, the Pavilion is a hub showcasing projects and initiatives sparked by the 10 Principles in Black Rock City. We are seeking art, performance, and participatory experiences drawn from the Burning Man Global Network to inspire and illustrate how Burning Man is a year-round and global cultural movement. You can visit the Pavilion on 6:15 and Esplanade.

Bonus points for art, performance or content that is dynamic, interactive, fun, delightful, approachable, surprising and inspires curiosity.

Ways to Participate…

Visual & Installation Artists

We are seeking visual art both 2D and 3D, which can either be free-standing on the ground or on pedestals, displayed on walls throughout the space, or suspended from the Pavilion ceiling. Bonus points if your art has been featured at an official regional event. Art must arrive in Black Rock City and be ready for installation by Sunday, August 26th. If your piece is departing from the San Francisco Bay Area, we may be able to help with its transport. Sorry, no flame effects in the Pavilion. 🙁

Performance Artists

Each day we will curate a lineup of unique, up-close n’ personal performances. Circus performers, magicians, storytellers, puppeteers, musicians with unusual instruments, jugglers, poets, dancers, will be showcased in an intimate stage environment. The best fit would be small acts: solo, duo, trio ensembles in a warm, low-tech setting, setting the mood for an incredible day.

Participatory Content Created by YOU

Don’t fit into any of the above formats? Tell us how you want to create a workshop or experience that is interactive, fun, and inspiring!

Fill out this form by July 7, 2018 (deadline extended) to submit for your participation – we look forward to hearing from you soon!

With appreciation and dust,

Everywhere/ARTery Activation Team
